By law, your medical records are yours. In practice, hospitals make it astonishingly difficult. Here is the playbook.

Under the Indian Medical Council regulations and the Patient Rights Charter, patients have the right to receive their complete medical records within 72 hours of a written request. In practice, this is one of the most violated rights in Indian healthcare.

What you are entitled to

  • Complete case sheet (not summary).
  • All lab reports, in original.
  • All imaging files (digital format acceptable).
  • Operative notes, if applicable.
  • Nursing notes and medication chart.

How to actually get them

Submit a written request, retain a stamped copy, and reference IMC regulation 1.3.1. 72-hour clock starts from the date of the stamped request.

If the hospital refuses or delays beyond 72 hours, you can escalate to the State Medical Council. The threat alone usually resolves it within a day.
